The Divine Relativity
Hartshorne's 1948 founding work of dipolar process theism
Tradition: Mid-twentieth-century American process theism
Hartshorne's 1948 founding work of dipolar process theism — God as social being
The Divine Relativity: A Social Conception of God is Charles Hartshorne's 1948 Yale Terry Lectures (delivered 1947), founding work of dipolar process theism. Hartshorne argues that classical theism's conception of God as absolutely immutable and impassible is incoherent; that God must be dipolar — possessing both abstract eternal essence and concrete, evolving, related being — and must be genuinely related to the world (the "divine relativity"). Foundational for process theology (extended in The Logic of Perfection 1962, A Natural Theology for Our Time 1967) and for the modern doctrine of God.
