Energy propagating through space over time is the domain of fields, waves, radiation, and the fundamental forces of nature. Electromagnetic waves travel through space at the speed of light; gravitational waves ripple through spacetime; the cosmic microwave background is the echo of energy filling space at an early moment in time. This triad, without matter, describes the universe at its most dynamic and least tangible.

Modern physics increasingly suggests that energy — distributed as fields through space and evolving through time — is more fundamental than matter. Yet the question remains: is spacetime itself energetic (as some interpretations of general relativity suggest, where spacetime geometry carries gravitational energy), or is energy simply what happens within spacetime? It is the picture painted by field theory and cosmology, and it raises the question of whether matter is anything more than a particularly stable pattern in this energetic fabric.
