Archimedes' Lever Demonstrations
Mechanical advantage made rigorous

"Give me a place to stand and I will move the Earth." Archimedes demonstrated compound pulleys hauling a fully-loaded ship with one hand, proving the law of the lever.
Archimedes formulated the law of the lever — that a weight and its distance from the fulcrum on one side must balance the weight and distance on the other — as the first rigorous mathematical treatment of a mechanical principle. In *On the Equilibrium of Planes* he proved the law from axioms about symmetry and centre of gravity. According to Plutarch, he then staged a public demonstration for King Hiero: using a compound pulley system, he single-handedly hauled a fully-loaded three-masted merchantman across the beach. The demonstration electrified the court and led Hiero to declare that "Archimedes was to be believed in everything that he might say." The lever and pulley became the foundation of classical mechanics, later systematised by Galileo and Newton.

Law of the lever: W₁ × d₁ = W₂ × d₂. A small force at a large distance from the fulcrum balances a large force at a small distance. Compound pulleys multiply the distance ratio, enabling one person to move enormous loads.
